California’s Central Coast region continues to be a treasure trove of incredible Rhône variety blends and increasingly, Bordeaux blends, which is originally what sparked interest for owners, Don and Susie Law, during their expansive search to find a site that could produce world class wines. And in 2007, by way of landing in Paso Robles, they had finally found their Holy Grail. The analysis of 42 soil pits on this site revealed coveted limestone with low vigor soils. This, combined with the high elevation and steep slopes, was the unique and remarkable property that would produce the premium fruit they desired.
Law Estate is one of the top producers in Paso Robles, making wines that have consistently scored higher among wine critics than any other Paso winery over the past 3-4 years. Philipp Pfunder was assistant winemaker at Law Estate from 2016 to 2019—in 2019 he became head winemaker. He’s worked at a broad range of wineries, including Kumeu River in New Zealand, Château Angélus in Bordeaux and Screaming Eagle in Napa. Through his experiences, he has developed a deep appreciation for the philosophy that wine is first an expression of place. Phil believes his role is to simply create an environment throughout the grape growing and winemaking process where the fruit is given the greatest opportunity to perform to its potential.
With the ending of a drought era in Paso Robles, the 2017 vintage brought not only new birth to their 100% estate grown vineyards, but also created the perfect stage to produce brightly aromatic, graciously balanced and extremely expressive wines.
